When you start the game you can hit explosives as a tag skill and I don't remember the guys name but a old dude In goodsprings will give you Dynamite. You can keep failing the varmint rifle mission to shoot bottles to get infinite ammo before you leave. Combine those and it makes quick work of the death claws.
