Today is National Freedom Day!
February 1st is the date set aside by a Joint Resolution of Congress ¾ of a century ago to commemorate the 13th Amendment to the US Constitution, which was 158 years ago. This day is also often referred to as Emancipation Day.
Perhaps one of the best ways to commemorate such an incredible day in our national history is to read the 43 words of the 13th Amendment. Another way to commemorate is to take a moment to reflect on the gravity of the circumstances necessitating such a significant change to our Constitution and join in thanksgiving that these days are behind us.
