The fediverse itself was already gaining the largest attention in Japan before 2016 (release year of Mastodon and Pleroma).
When Mastodon (2016-03-16) and Pleroma (2016-10-26) were released, it was when the Fediverse exploded in Japan. The top 3 largest Fediverse instances (accounts) for years, were Japanese servers, powered by Mastodon.
In 2018-04-19, another Japanese-developed fediverse software was released: Misskey. Which further increased the number of instances and Japanese accounts in the Fediverse.
I think Japan still holds the largest accounts and active accounts in the entire Fediverse. There are also Japanese individuals and organisations hosting more than one instance for Korea and China. ;)
