That was "fun." Called 911 as soon as it happened (watched it from my bathroom window) because in a lot of cases everyone assumes someone else already called emergency services and in reality emergency services never actually gets contacted.
First thing I did after he sped away was grab the first piece of clean fabric I could find that I could use to apply pressure and make a makeshift tourniquet if need be. It just so happened to be a shit of mine.
On a side note I still wear it regularly. Laundry detergent is one of the few things I'm not willing to buy store brand on. Tide all the fucking way! Well worth the money!
Anyway I assessed the wound. The bullet appeared to be lodged in her kneecap or either went through the knee cap and was lodged in her knee. I was betting on it being in the knee cap tho because all signed pointed to that. (I also turned out to be correct). There wasn't any apparent nerve damage and no signs if internal bleeding so I knew it probably didn't hit an artery. I applied pressure and asked her to hold it while I felt her pulse. Just to be more sure that there was no internal bleeding that the shock/adrenaline might be masking from her senses. I keep her calm, explained what I thought happened, but also explained why I was doing what I was doing. Also explained it was very unlikely there was internal bleeding but I couldn't know for sure and I just wanted to make sure she was alright until help arrived and that I'd take every step I could to make sure she got to the hospital safely.
The next day her brother (who I had never met or even seen before [maybe I saw him when they were loading her up into the ambulance?]) came by to thank me. Apparently she thought more highly of me than any of the EMTs or doctors/nurses at the ER because I not only seemed confident but explained everything I was doing, why, what the chances of a bad outdone were, etc. According to her, "he explained everything to me so I could understand it, he didn't try to sugar coat it, and he was as calm as a cucumber. I knew if worse came to worse I was gonna be alright." Apparently the same couldn't be said for EMT or ER techs, nurses, or doctors.
I guess I at least have that going for me :yui_shrug:
Also, her ex was caught 2 days later. He's still in prison. Has charges of assault with a deadly weapon, felon in possession of a firearm, and I think a few lesser charges. Those were the big two. .ubv⁸
