Pardon the griping, but I've just about had it with every streaming app on the AppleTV having slightly different video player controls. I understand that every app wants to distinguish itself and thinks it has some special insight into how to make clicking PAUSE a better experience, but every one of them is wrong. Consistency is crucial.

When I'm watching a show, I don't think about what app I'm using, and I don't want to have to. I just want the controls to work the same everywhere. But what we've got is a confusing mess, and instead of letting muscle memory do the navigating, I have to use my actual reasoning facilities to figure out how to skip back 10 seconds in the app I happen to be using. And then I'm no longer immersed in the show, but struggling with the app and cursing these fucking designers who wouldn't know a human factor if it bit them in the ass.

Apple had the chance when they launched the platform to make the video controls standard and to require apps to conform. They could still do that if they wanted to, but now they'd have to pay a conversion cost. And it would still be worth it.
