@afewbugs it’s actually completely different from any kind of East Asian dessert so actually very outside the realm of things we usually have. Way too much sugar and fat. However there is a theory that it comes from a middle eastern dessert called mamoun

Personally I find the traditional baked ones way too heavy and sweet, can maybe have a quarter slice. But I do enjoy the more modernist interpretations which are more common in China / Taiwan / HK / Singapore and not so easily found outside of it
