    Just a thought:

In the early 2000's, in Metropolis (2001) movie, Planetes (2003) series, and others, anime was able to incorporate 3D into 2D scenes smoothly.

Then, for no apparent reason, came over a decade of choppy 3D animation, from Kemono Friends to Berserk remake, Dorohedoro, etc...

Finally, this decade, Demon Slayer (2024) comes out with smooth 3D animation again.
(Not recommended BTW, the animation is good, but the story is mediocre)

What the hell happened in the 2010's?

Mauling it over with a friend, the best I could find was Blender.
3D software was either not as good, or too expensive, and there was a generation of animators who didn't know how to use it well as a result, at least in the anime industry.
Then Blender rose to prominence around 2019.

As good a reason as any, but I'm not 100% convinced.
