A friend gave me a demo of niri, a “scrolling tileable window manager” for Wayland, which sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole last night in seeing how people are trying to clone this in macOS; they’re all either janky AF on multiple monitors, vibecoded, or require Tahoe so I can’t evaluate them (yet)

Folks, never before in my 40 years of being a Mac user have I felt even a twinge of envy at a baseline GUI feature available on another OS. Regular tiling window managers don’t work for me, I’ve been doing window management the classic Mac way, everything everywhere all at once - not even with (work)Spaces; because I tend to have 40+ windows open at any given time and keep track of them spatially

Niri is the first thing I’ve seen that attempts to take my mental model and give it guidelines

This is the sort of thing that I think old Apple would have come up with before they got obsessed with making everything more like iOS. It would not surprise me if we start to see a shift of always-has-a-terminal-open types back towards Linux on the basis of Niri alone
