I like shitting on other genres of music, but I'd be a hypocrite if I didn't point out that in Heavy Metal the top artists are the same artists as 30-40 or even more years ago. Very little past the year 2000 had staying power, and the underground are stuck in a loop of "how can I make this sound Tr00 Kvult?" or "I need to spend my time perfecting a guitar sound instead of actually writing songs".

And honestly seeing how the internet and social media are, I don't see this changing anytime soon. With as much media as there is out there it's incredibly difficult to sound new or fresh to a large enough audience to break into the mainstream.
