Why the fuck would a deathcamp running trains to feed the 24/7 ovens bother to stop and tattoo a number on the arm of the input?

And why why why would they take the trouble to keep them alive, well-fed, and in good physical and mental health before marching them in?

Why not just shoot them at the train-stations then stack the bodies like cord-wood in the boxcars? Much more efficient that way.
