Schlep is adopted from German, perhaps brought into the United States through Yiddish. It basically means a slacker, and in practice (direct experience) seems to be used to refer to a common person who is regularly beset by the drudgery and insults of daily life. It is a joke; being a schlep is not glorious, but sometimes funny.
