After the 6ft bearded pervert arrived at St Helier Hospital in Carshalton, Surrey, from a men’s prison shackled to guards his attention seeking triggered a case that epitomises public sector pearl clutching. He then subjected her to vicious racist abuse and threats of violence - offences so serious that if it happened in any other setting he would have been arrested and charged. Did her employer steadfastly support her? Back her to the hilt? Report the degenerate exhibitionist to the police? Of course it didn’t - it swiftly mobilised an army of box-ticking human resources pen pushers because in the public sector the rights of a sex offender are placed above those of a nurse. And what of the actual criminal? His complaints - despite having no basis in reality - were taken so seriously and given the highest priority that Ms Melle was subjected to a two-year investigation that almost destroyed her mental health, livelihood, and career. There are few words to accurately describe the ludicrous sensitivities of those running the NHS. The issue at the heart of the trust’s case was Ms Melle could have identified the racist sex offender.
Just think about that for a moment. So concerned was an NHS trust that a convicted paedophile could be outed for racially abusing a nurse for doing her job - professionally and in accordance with the law - that his rights were placed above hers. Ultimately, and in no small part thanks to Ms Melle’s courage and convictions, the case against her collapsed and action against her was halted. No nurse should face regulatory action for accurately describing biological sex or for speaking under whistleblowing protections.
