i remember as a kid hearing about how insanely kitschy and wonderful 1976 was in terms of 200 years of America celebrations and being sad that I missed it yet I was also looking forward to the 250th because that’s the one I’d get to witness and…well…shit.

i generally don’t doomer on main but, seriously, wtf has happened to it all? it’s always been far from perfect but that was also the promise -> building towards something that could be.

now what is it? get a life sentence for running a zine club? get arrested for looking at a disgusting, rotten pool? having your hard earned (and natural) rights, freedom, medical care taken away out of hate.

i see lots of tributes to the 250th that have the years 1776-2026 and i stopped reading them as a celebration of an experiment in freedom. they’re not a celebration. they’re a listing of its birth and a death.
