My current working theory on human social corruption is that malevolent people flock to anything with the trappings of 'safety' and that means that safety in any human endeavor is at best a carefully curated illusion if not an outright lie.

Religion, Medicine, Law, Charities, whatever domains get their own micro tyrants / narcissists and then they cooperate via game theory. At that point they basically start "running the asylum".

People recognize this and think it's just a matter of "keeping them out" but this entirely ignores the real possibility of those within becoming corrupted by the (overinvested) trust.

This leads to withdrawl of trust which creates different dangers and different "safety signals" that are all in constant flux.
