A lot of my friends growing up couldn’t afford air conditioning or lived in houses with such old wiring that even if they could afford a window unit, their electric system wouldn’t handle the current draw. Telling folks to “just go sit in the AC” is just pure ignorance of how much of the rest of the world lives.
