We live in a golden era of hand-me-down laptops.
It has never before been—and will likely never again be—this easy to get a decent computer for free just by asking your friends and neighbors, "do you have an old working laptop lying around that you don't use and I can have?"
Ten year old laptops work fine for most non-gamer things. With some gumption you can replace dead batteries and they're basically good as new (if the hinges aren't busted).
