You let the mushrooms dry on a tray for 2 days first, then stab them with the skewers when they're leathery so they don't split. Then stab the skewers through a rope to hang them up like this, and eventually they dry out entirely.

you can dry pretty much any vegetable like this if you cut it the right shape and size.
