I'll check out the book and recommend Hackers: Heroes of The Computer Revolution by Steven Levy. It was first published in 1984 and covers the beginnings of open source software, Lisp machines, and the model train club at MIT. I read it as a kid and saw an interview with John Carmack where he said he also read it as a kid and thought it was too late for him everything had already been done.
