– ignore anything phrased as a twee maxim. 'show don't tell', 'write what you know' are, at best, meant to promote extremely specific stylistic movements
– separate the writing and editing parts of your mind. when you're writing your sole goal should be to get the words out. you can look them over later
– you do need to look them over later. first draft is never good (and when it is, it could still be better)
