I don't think Japan choose to abandon their families for work.

Suicide due to overworking have become an issue. Which would indicate that this is not at all the result of a happy choice but rather the outcome of a people that have been forced to working conditions that could almost be described as slavery.

But this is their way of fighting. And they are still, to some extent resisting. They still have honor.
