But he is wrong about Wilson, refusing US folly was important, the Open University was greatness. The Iran conflict is reckless and irrational — we need to tough it out hoping that Trump quickly comes to his sensesNato governments are obliged to sustain the pretence that the United States is being run by responsible people. The rest of us, however, can exercise our privilege as mere citizens to declare that this is untrue. Those urging that we should enter the Middle East war are inviting us to a karaoke party in a quagmire.
The only thing anybody today remembers about Harold Wilson’s Sixties government is that it kept us out of Vietnam, despite enormous pressure from the White House. At a 1964 Washington reception, secretary of state Dean Rusk, a Vietnam hawk, snarled at a British journalist: “When the Russians invade Sussex, don’t expect us to come and help you!”</a></label><br><a href="https://media.mastodon.scot/media_attachments/files/116/266/980/371/249/552/original/51a65f9dbd64b29b.png" rel="external">https://media.mastodon.scot/media_attachments/files/116/266/980/371/249/552/original/51a65f9dbd64b29b.png</a></li></ol></footer></blockquote>
