On January 1st, 1804, Jean-Jacques Dessalines proclaimed Haiti's independence from the French after a 12 years war to free the slave population.

It was the first nation to be established by former slaves and it paid a terrible price for this freedom. But it also influenced most of South America to reject slavery due to its help to Simon Bolivar.
