It's no different from a console, really. Consoles are also proprietary, and you also shouldn't trust browsing the web or storing data on them. But for playing games, they're fine, especially if you (soft)mod them to play pirated games. Though of course, older consoles are better, new consoles are redundant when you can just get a PC. Actually, I just installed media players on my PS2 and Wii, the other day, so I can watch old stuff on my CRT TV. Unfortunately the PS2 is a little more limited, basically only does AVI, and also, there is something wrong with my cable, so there is a lot of noise in the audio. The Wii works fine, but I have to use the Wiimote for everything, which is horrible. But hey, it works. Better than nothing, when my monitor has a cracked solder joint. And definitely better colors than my LCD, it's not even close.
