You know the board game Monopoly?

I don't know about you, but I don't think I've ever actually finished the game. In my experience, there's always a point when it becomes clear who's going to win, and everyone is just going through the motions and rapidly losing interest. People just start talking about something else or drift to another game. The person winning is constantly trying to wrangle everyone back, but eventually even they become bored and stop.
