aevaok I installed a half dozen desktop environments and mate is the only one that didn't make me feel like something was horribly wrong upon opening it (incidentally, I don't think it supports wayland, but it was smart enough to set the dpi scale to 200% instead of 100% so I could actually read anything right away) so I guess I'm gonna just run that for a while and see how it feels.
