today i have my newest (to me) watch on. A 1969 Bulova Accutron 214 Railroad. This is a real joy of a watch to me. It represents an inflection point in personal timekeeping. Trains were responsible for accurate pocketwatches becoming common, largely because of a wreck in Kipton, Ohio. This watch pretty much marks the end of that era, where in-cab signals took over for accurate adherence to timetables. At the same time, the tuning fork movement is the immediate predecessor to quartz. It uses a steel tuning fork and a tiny single transistor feedback loop to keep it ringing. Each vibration pushes a tiny gear with a tiny finger, 360 times per second. This gives it one of the smoothest possible sweeping second hands. This example is running +4 sec/day at the moment but i’ve only made a rough adjustment so far. #wristcheck
