Over the course of four years, Boris timed his photographs precisely. He wanted to have the perfect angle from Cerro Paranal, home of ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT), to capture the Sun and Moon rising directly behind the ELT on top of Cerro Armazones, about 20 km away. The time window for such an image is incredibly narrow: due to the Earth’s orbit around the Sun and the Moon’s orbit around the Earth, the point where the Sun and the Moon rise on the horizon changes every day. This means that photographs like these are only possible a few days every year. It takes just a few seconds for the Sun and the Moon to move behind the ELT, and if missed, the chance to capture an epic moment is over.
