When I was a 17yo kid on the prairie in school in a town w/o stoplights, I wrote a paper on war & was given the chance to go to D.C. I’d never been on an airplane before.
We stood in the spot where Dr. King gave his Dream speech and took turns reading it out.
There is a direct & energized line between that day, the words of a great man, that glimpse of my own efficacy and the unjustness of oppression, and my path first gen through law school and into public service.
It’s not just a day.
