They come from the Anglo-Saxon and Celtic black grim dog legends, originally guardians of Hel, the place of the dead, but later guardians of both Irish Catholic and British Anglican country churches. Hence the "Hell" in "Hellhound".

Fuwawa and Mococo Abyssgard are both hellhounds, though not like MGE ones.
