At the entrance to Auschwitz was the sign “arbeit macht frei” or “work sets you free.” It was a sick joke.
Except for those liberated by the Allies, those who entered Auschwitz were never made free in this world.
They were separated at arrival, with one line sent to “showers” that were gas chambers, where they were mass murdered with gas because they weren’t worth wasting a bullet. Their nails clawed at the gas chambers walls, seeking anything to find air. Their bodies were mass cremated (in violation of Jewish law), only after anything of value, like gold fillings, were stripped from them.
And the other line? They were starved and worked to death through forced labor to feed the Nazi war machine while being subjected to random execution.
Having fences, bunks, and showers does not make something Auschwitz.
What’s happening in Florida is vile, but it’s not Auschwitz. And if you use that analogy, you are both diminishing what happened in Auschwitz and distracting from what is *actually* happening.
