i remember someone once telling me that directories weren't enough to organize their pictures, because they needed both chronological sorting and tagging by categories, and with directories you can't do both, and if you do tagging, an image can't be in more than one directory

but now, i wonder, why not just symlink, have one structure be chronological, then symlink the pictures to directories representing tags

you can even list multiple tags at once with ls + uniq
