The authoritarian coup taking place in the U.S. federal government right now, although it is driven mainly by the so-called "conservative" party, is not a matter of policy disputes of any ordinary sort.

Reasonable people can be "conservative" about policy, but to align yourself with the GOP in this moment is a very different signal: It says you would rather burn the world than compromise in any way. It's not a political choice, it's an assault, and marks you as an enemy combatant.
