For anyone in Los Angeles that runs into National Guard, try to engage with them. When I was on the streets in 1992 for the uprising that had the biggest impact on me.
It will make you more human to them, more relatable, harder to attack. They may be from San Bernardino or Palmdale, but it's easier to connect with them than Federal troops from Southern tier states.
Don't underestimate the impact of the moral injury that can be caused to troops by being ordered to attack peaceful citizens.
