    dear internet, i have a question for you

    can you help me understand how it is, exactly, that if i plug a Transcend 512MB industrial compactflash card into my 286's XT-IDE, it works perfectly fine, with the exception that network cards - and seemingly only network cards - completely stop working?

    it may help to know that this same model of compactflash card causes my 486 to refuse to boot and make a buzzing alarm noise that usually can only be produced by drastically overvolting the cpu
