Freedom isn't even a thing that most people want, it's just this tenuous concept that exists in their minds which they've been told they want actually have little understanding of. What they really want is stability and structure. They want somebody to tell them what to do and where to do it without their day to day existence being miserable. That's not even a bad thing per se, it's been the bedrock of every civilization since we grew beyond tribes that numbered a few dozen at the largest.
