I don't like Starmer, his party, his politics, or his policies.

    But. BUT.

If he DIDN'T loudly shout "no open cheque book" at this point, but promised to fix funding shortfalls, it'd give the Tories carte blanche to run up huge deficits via crony outsourcing contracts and then dump the resulting mess in Starmer's lap—and him having just promised to fix the spending shortfalls. Which would kneecap his first term spending plans.

Similar with "we will persist with Brexit". It's nonsense, but ...

@cstross Ah yes, he's just lying to get into power, at which point he'll absolutely implement his _real_ agenda.

Just like he lied in the 2019 manifesto, then?

@cstross Well, considering the leftist purge he's been doing since, I'd wager that the 2019 pledges were lies, at the very least.

Perhaps he's lying now as well, but who knows, and who cares?

@pettter We don't know how much of the 2019 manifesto was lies, because he didn't get to form a government.

(For the record, in the next GE I'll be voting SNP. And if I was in Englandshire I'd probably vote LibDem. The only valid reason to vote Labour at this point is a tactical vote to eject a Tory.)

@po8crg @cstross I believe he committed in the leadership election to maintain the 2019 pledges, so yeah, same difference.

@pettter @cstross Do you mean 2020 pledges in the leadership election, not 2019 pledges in the general election?
