For those who don't like the giant messages #fedilab has the setting for you
The setting Truncate long messages under timeline makes it so that as soon as a message has more than the specified amount of lines it will display a show more button

@unusualplan
We used lines and not chars because with few chars, you can make a very long message.

I just this and would love if I could specify how many characters still to show.
@unusualplan
But yes, I could be possible. Bookmarked.

Yes, there are two improvements, with the way it is displayed.
Playing with lines is a little bit more complicated than with chars that's why the view is sometimes truncated :)
The best would be to evaluate where messages should be truncated and not use the view to truncate them.
Displaying lines remaining need some extra work too.
But should be possible :)

Put better, my request would be to make the number of displayed lines selectable before the "show more" text is shown.
I could be wrong but I think currently the cut off makes the posts shorter than most. But might just be how people are using their lines ?? Anyway, thanks for listening :-)
