"Themes like everything is connected, nothing happens without a purpose, and nothing is what it seems are central to both yoga philosophy and conspiratorial thinking"

Wow, seriously NPR? Is this real?? ???

(According to their birdsite bio, the by-lined author on this "story" is a senior producer for the podcast it basically promotes ?)

One yoga teacher loses it, and all of a sudden wellness is a pipeline to QAnon... ??? I just can't with this story. Seriously. The world is literally burning and this is what they think matters at NPR?

@tokyo_0 Yikes!? I can't believe NPR would allow that.

@peter Exactly - that's my issue with this particular piece. It could have been good if it had made the points you did here and supported them with data, rather than making broad statements about how a specific religious philosophy makes people vulnerable to radicalisation without any evidence.

@tokyo_0 i guess the problem is the implication that there's something inherent to yoga or Vedic philosophy that would lead to QAnon, but that's obviously not true since most of the adherents are weird millenialist Christians.

@tokyo_0 i haven't listened to the podcast or the story, but there **is** a lot of back-and-forth between certain sectors of "wellness" influencers and QAnon. i think it's surprising to people because they assume QAnon appeals to "conservatives" and yoga/wellness to "liberals" but social media scrambles a lot of categories and conspiracy-minded folks on both sides have ended up in QAnon-adjacent stuff.

@peter Really? I always had the impression it was ok, although I haven't ever listened to it very much.

@peter Ah, false balance advocates... dangerous indeed. There's a lot of it about.

@tokyo_0 it is... ok. but the problem is they are committed to the "some say/others say" school of journalism and when you do that in a political environment of rising fascism, it comes out very, very bad. it's exactly the kind of liberals that open the door to fascism.
