Wish programmers were as concerned about copilot and the like as artists are over AI "art".

@trashheap I feel like it isn't the same realm at all. AI-generated art can please even if it has marginal flaws. AI-generated code won't pass muster towards tangible features since even if it looks right, computers will not be as easily impressed.
Although StackOverflow has already banned the use of AI-generated code in solutions because of the overall low quality, so it's a strong signal. -

@trashheap Feels a bit like the "copying & pasting without understanding meme": Code quality gets worse, security bugs pop up, developers shrug and say "IDK, an AI wrote it".
Hopefully this leads to more quality control in the future. Because you can be even less sure that the codebase is "stable" and "robust".
So maybe it is not such a bad thing? (The stealing of code obviously is.)

@wakame @trashheap Again, there's a big difference with AI art. Whether you are a programmer or not, if you write bad code with or without AI assistance, your job is on the line. With AI art, if you aren't an artist and use AI to generate artwork, you're currently completely in the clear. AI has been criticized for abstracting the responsibility, for example for moderation or HR decisions, but it doesn't apply to AI programming assistance since there always is a human at the end of the chain that can receive the blame. -

@wakame In general my view is the concerns are very different to AI art" but no less serious in terms of long term effects.
And programmer folks in mass are quick to embrace convenience

@trashheap Do you think tools like copilot will actually cost people jobs?
I am mostly concerned that these tools make managers/customers expect everything to be "faster", which will make every bug a higher-stakes blame game.
