Canada updated its Copyright Act in 2022 to extend copyright from 50 years to 70 years following the death of the author.
Because of this, no more new Canadian authors will come out of copyright until 1 January 2043 (those who died in 1972).

The public domain consists of all the creative work to which no exclusive intellectual property rights apply. Those rights may have expired, been forfeited, expressly waived, or may be inapplicable.
Because those rights have expired, anyone can legally use or reference those works without permission.
