Alexandre Oliva (lxo@gnusocial.net)'s status on Wednesday, 14-Dec-2022 02:49:46 JST Alexandre Oliva quite honestly, I was hoping for something along the lines of 'forking the network', to which I could trivially suggest setting up a defederated instance or somesuch. all the changes you have in mind sound like plenty of work, that might be done either on apps or servers, and it's not even clear that mastodon would be the best starting point, but surely it wouldn't hurt to file feature requests in mastodon's project, especially if there are plans to contribute implementations for them. I haven't giving the features proper much thought, and I only interact with mastodon users indirectly, so I know very little about it myself. good luck! -

Alexandre Oliva (lxo@gnusocial.net)'s status on Wednesday, 14-Dec-2022 15:15:29 JST Alexandre Oliva *nod*, there's a tension already underway between people who wish to find others (e.g. contacts from other dying networks), and people who don't wish to be found (harassment victims), who would rather not interact with the network at large (discriminated groups), and who would like to impose their own set of requirements and interaction rules on the entire network. I have a hunch that federation as it is could make room for very diverse requirements and interaction modes, perhaps with add-ons for communities with additional requirements. the add-ons don't necessary need to be implemented on the servers; much could be done through apps or additional websites, sort of like plenty of stuff is implemented on smartphones without having to modify the phone network or even the operating systems running on the phones. add-ons, whether for apps or servers, are probably the best place in which to experiment with additional features, before integration into mainline. challenges are to be expected when the additional features conflict with the preexisting underlying protocols (e.g. activitypub), but that's the case even if you were to modify the mainline programs, since the fediverse interacts with plenty of other non-mastodon implementations. there's surely room to advance the protocol, but there's some more inertia there. -

Sergia (She/Her) ☮️??️???? (sergia@dair-community.social)'s status on Wednesday, 14-Dec-2022 15:15:30 JST Sergia (She/Her) ☮️??️???? @lxo I see. Thank you for the feedback! I am thinking if it's compatible and integrated consensually with mastodon, it would be a great plus: otherwise, fediverse will have the same issue as corp networks: disconnected platforms where people don't know about each other, contributing to polarization

Sergia (She/Her) ☮️??️???? (sergia@dair-community.social)'s status on Friday, 16-Dec-2022 01:34:00 JST Sergia (She/Her) ☮️??️???? @lxo yeah, I haven't even thought about this. There's so much to people's consent - each person has their own "consent preferences", what they want to see, how, when, etc - I feel the "tech solution" to this (if there is ever one) is that each person can customize their feed to their needs (consciously!), and not forget about a bit of exploration of different views
Wondering what @timnitGebru feels about all this - I feel I hijacked her post and give the stage back to her now.
