Ruud (ruud@mastodon.world)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Dec-2022 01:51:06 JST Ruud @indubitablydubin @mjgardner Yes it can. Preferrably the network should scale by having more instances. But if there aren’t, my server can handle more and we can scale out.

Andrew Dubin (indubitablydubin@mstdn.social)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Dec-2022 01:58:22 JST Andrew Dubin @ruud @mjgardner a friend of mine is interested in providing a server, however his main concern was scalability. I forwarded the mastodon.world blog post to him. If you have any other resources. I’d gladly forward them over.

Ruud (ruud@mastodon.world)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Dec-2022 02:18:36 JST Ruud @indubitablydubin @jan @mjgardner Yes the activitypub has some challenges I guess when the network grows. A server hosting an account with 10 million followers will have severe performance issues, to start with.

Jan (jan@toot.io)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Dec-2022 02:18:38 JST Jan @ruud @indubitablydubin @mjgardner Scaling an instance works quite well. Scaling the network with the protocol is another story. Mastodon is the first bigger use case for ActivityPub. When the network grows 10x we will see interesting side effects on the protocol layer.

Ruud (ruud@mastodon.world)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Dec-2022 04:38:59 JST Ruud @indubitablydubin It would be best if everyone would host their own, but that won’t happen. So, decentralized as much as possible

Mark Gardner (mjgardner@mastodon.sdf.org)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Dec-2022 04:39:01 JST Mark Gardner @ruud @indubitablydubin I favor more radical decentralization where I own my own site that still federates. Not necessarily #Mastodon but interop via #ActivityPub and #IndieWeb.

Andrew Dubin (indubitablydubin@mstdn.social)'s status on Tuesday, 13-Dec-2022 04:39:01 JST Andrew Dubin @mjgardner @ruud how would it be decentralized if you own it? Can you further define “federate” for me? I might misunderstand.
