KDE Plasma loads for 70 seconds on a laptop with 4 GB RAM and a 2.4 GHz processor. Xfce 4.12 takes 7 seconds.
Measured from startx command up until menus become usable.
Windows is probably worse, so no wonder normies get all the newest hardware.

@Sprinklednights Some programs are written specifically for KDE, but if you can find replacements (I think the only ones without are like, Krita and Kolourpaint, maybe), then yeah, it's nothing.
Actually, Slackware switching from KDE 3 to 4 made me seek another distro then (this was somewhere in 2008). That was before I knew how to, like, just install all the packages I want myself etc. But I knew enough to drop a trash DE when I saw it. And KDE 5 is even worse.
@digdeeper Microsoft Windows was so resource heavy that it broke, so I had to fresh install Windows again.
I personally don't understand the benefits of KDE Plasma. It is bloated with features that you never want, the menus are freaking ugly and it took more RAM than Xfce 4.16 ever did. I can't tell myself to use KDE Plasma for more than two days.
Sure Xfce has flaws too, but I felt less overwhelmed by the flaws of Xfce than the flaws on KDE Plasma.
I don't have anything residual, this KDE installation is completely new. And I even disabled compositor etc.
What you think is "quite low" won't be the same for someone with old hardware. So, my test seems to show that new DEs are unusable for someone with old hardware.
@keith Well of course, if it's "significantly more powerful", it will load faster. That's the whole point of the test.
Now try the same with xfce 4.12.
@digdeeper Besides that KDE Plasma is apparently "spyware" because of KUserFeedback...
