   Anyone who called Mastodon instance migrations "seamless" has not actually ever migrated. They are "possible" at best.

   First, you need to set up the new account's preferences, filters, description, links, and pictures. Manually.

   Then, you export six CSV files and import them one by one.

   Now your friends see the follow notification and follow you again (?) or text you in confusion.

   Then you make the old account a redirect, the new one an alias, and then you trigger the followers move.

     If you were following any private accounts, they need to accept your follow requests again. 311 of my 330 follows moved over.

     After all this it will take a while I'm told for all followers to migrate. We'll see how many make it.

     Finally, posts (incl. pins and DMs) and favorites simply can't be moved.

     I wonder what happens to notifications (likes, mentions, DMs) sent to the old account. ?♂️

     But hey, my new domain is awesome and I'm in charge of emojis now.

     The move was somewhat chaotic.

     My impression is that everyone got the move message immediately. That overwhelmed my $39/mo (!!) masto.host instance, which started rate-limiting.

     Retries were scheduled without any jitter, so all the ones that failed came back at the same time, overwhelming the instance again. Rinse and repeat for a few hours.

     Not sure what would have happened if the retries failed too many times, as everyone immediately unfollowed the old account ?♂️
