One of the things I just can't understand is how certain people from marginalized communities end up in the Republican party.

Don't get me wrong I don't think the Democrats are all that better, but at least understandable from my perspective.

I am just a transgender/queer person with an interest in sustainability and public land. So maybe I am biased?

@nova I think for a lot of those people money overrides everything - and they think they have enough to just buy their rights if it gets ugly wherever they live

Maybe another way of framing it:

Colonialism, capitalism, and white supremacy is just collective trauma that some of us have accepted and some of us have not. Our global mindshare hasn't matured to conviction yet.

I still can't believe marginalized communities are still this far "under the spell" of colonialism and white supremacy.

@nova sadly, some people in marginalized communities become convinced that by appealing to and appeasing our oppressors, they’ll somehow “elevate” themselves out of that minority status.

Re: Kayne West and Clarence Thomas

But what they fail to realize is all they end up becoming is a puppet for the very people they call “friend.”

@nova There's certainly an element of personal finances that come into it. The people in my family who have escaped poverty and war and lean a bit to the right will always vote for the party that taxes lower (not in the US mind you). They grew up not trusting the government and would prefer to hand over as little of their money as possible. I've heard it referred to as short-sighted and voting against best interests, but it's deeper than that.

@nova Fight for what you believe in, unapologetically. For most people, this means financial consequences so you have to work around the system. A type of balance I guess you could say but you have to know when to put your foot down.

@nova I found a lot of insight in reading this very old but recently elevated article published in Harpers in 1941. https://harpers.org/archive/1941/08/who-goes-nazi/

It comes down to people willing to ignore their own identity and wider oppression for those dopamine producing allures of fame, wealth, power, and acceptance in some cases whether they be real or imagined.

@nova I’ve seen it in some immigrant family members where they shift to a “I’ve got mine” attitude and it pushes them towards the right. There’s also things rooted in religion that can do it too, saw that growing up in south Texas.

@nova I came to a better understanding for why some fellow South East Asians might. I was ashamed of my own ignorance as I heard what their experience of the torture, starvation, "re-education", and murders of friends and neighbors under the Khmer Rouge was like. They said it was actually far worse than what the movie "The Killing Fields" depicted of the genocide. I may be extrapolating too much, but it made me recall how data for ...
