the greater irony is that such accusations, at such times, are likely part of paid propaganda campaigns.
accusing one's enemy of that which one does oneself is not a new trick either.
I'm seeing reports of chinese demonstrations in which people use blank signs. local media says people are protesting against zero covid policies. from what I read from you, I would guess they're protesting the weakening of the anti-covid policies. but blank signs offer an easy opportunity for western propaganda to fill in the blanks however they like.
"You are Chinese therefore you are not a real person with agency and opinions like me" leads to exactly this- the same folks who claim "I don't have a problem with Chinese people just the CCP" casually advocating for mass genocide while their neighbors stand silently by.
The accusations of "wumao" (paid propagandist), "CCP Shill" "bot" that follow any Chinese national on social media, voicing the most average, uncontroversial, typical Average Zhou perspectives from China are not harmless- they are deliberate attempts to dehumanize an entire race.
The idea that we aren't people, our lives are cheap, that we're collectivist ants is a foundation of Western self-image, media, and foreign policy. Anything that implies we are thinking, breathing, individuals the equal of any is an obvious Oriental trick to loudly denounce.
After the war- Germans were punished for their warcrimes against Europeans- who were people. But Japanese? Well Asians aren't *really* people, it's not the same...
But Rita Zucca or Mildred Gillars? The Italian and German American women who did voluntarily what Iva would not do under duress? Well, that doesn't fit the narrative, so almost no one remembers them.
Most of us have heard of Tokyo Rose- the sinister duplicitous Asian-American who sided with Japanese against her own country? Except Iva Toguri didn't, she remained loyal to the end and was smeared and imprisoned for it. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iva_Toguri_D%27Aquino
This is something that Asians are *specifically* subjected to. Japanese-Americans facing internment were assumed to be loyal to Imperial Japan, while white German and Italian-Americans were assumed to have personal agency.
Again, when people push the narrative that all Chinese nationals are "bots", have no personal agency, aren't creative (like machines), are brainwashed ants- this is not harmless speculation. These are racist attempts to dehumanize us- and most of you quietly accept it.
Here, you want to see why Bob is so smug and comfortable?
Hey @MichaelEHayden@twitter.com @WajahatAli@twitter.com @Shayan86@twitter.com @abughazalehkat@twitter.com @MelissaRyan@twitter.com @ScottHech@twitter.com- thoughts on giving clout with a follow to a guy openly advocating genocide?
Least they're not dancing around it anymore. You'll start seeing bigger accounts repeat this, at first tactfully, then they'll drop the pretense. When I say "we aren't people to them" you'll see what I've been talking about. This isn't a fringe opinion, it's just out in the open.
