    I like these results.

    I think it's not sufficient to have the federated social network.

    I'm not sure if it's necessary, but if pressed I'd say yes.

    This is essential infrastructure for expression, information, and socialization.

    We can't leave it up to a single one-size-fits-all solution -- even one with the best of intentions.

    Human needs are too diverse for that single player to meet them all, even if they had the best intentions.

      @evan Arguably you could also have a just, healthy society without any form of social network — at least by its modern definition. So the “necessary” can be interpreted about the necessity of any social network rather than whether it’s federated or not.

      @nightpool I don't know. Do you think the Greeks had anything close to healthy societies, at any time in our history?

      @evan it seems weird to imagine ANY piece of information technology as necessary for society—were the Greeks incapable of healthy societies simply because they hadn't invented the internet yet?

      @nightpool @maid

      I guess another part of the question is whether this poll applies to fictional or alternative reality societies, or past societies, or is more about the world we live in today.

      Is a federated social network necessary for a healthy and just society in every possible world? No. Not in the hypothetical world where the implicature is untrue.

      Is that an interesting conversation to have? Maybe. Less so than the application to our current, real, existing world.

      @maid @evan yes, but "federated social network" was the "necessary" technology in question

      @nightpool@cybre.space @evan@prodromou.pub technology is a very broad concept. Did ancient Greeks use measurement tools, calendars? Those are also information technology, broadly any society relies on information technology for a good part of its existence.
