This is a decent breakdown of the Mastodon side of the Fediverse, but sad to see no acknowledgment of the rest of the ecosystem, including software like @soapbox that addresses most of their UI/feature criticisms.

They also got a few things wrong/half-true. (Ex. implying that Gab and Truth Social are part of the "Mastodon Network" when neither of them currently federate.) But still it's nice to see people with large platforms at least attempt to discuss Mastodon honestly.

It's better at least than other reporting which discusses the entire Fediverse as "Mastodon" (they do this, but at least all servers they mention are actually Mastodon or Mastodon forks so you can't entirely argue with it), and they did a good job explaining the basics of server blocklist and the toxicity involved.

But I think journalists tend to be too focused on themselves and how things impact them, so they often miss much more interesting stories when reporting on the Fediverse. ?♀️
