@heluecht The classic use case is someone victim of a massive or coordinated harassment campaign, hundreds or thousands of people leaving provocative replies on public posts. As a reaction, the user switches their account to restricted (or "protected" on Twitter), only allowing their followers to interact even with their public posts.
I don't even know if the current Friendica feature allows this, but having public posts available through the one-way feed isn't necessarily an issue in this context. Besides, we could also restrict access to the feed based on this setting.

@wilhelm It is a false sense of security since you only have to swap /profile/ with /feed/.
I really would like to know a valid use case for that feature that can't be achieved in a different way.

@heluecht Without having extensive info on technical background or implementation, this sounds as if the feature may give users a false sense of security and could cause harm. Or am I reading too much into your comment? I mean we all know that signs neither work in real nor virtual life e.g. did the ad industry ever care about Do Not Track header?

@hypolite Some technical background: This "Hide your profile details" acts more like a sign that tells that you aren't allowed to enter the lawn than as a fence that makes it hard to enter the lawn. It is always possible for a user to see the content anyway - it is only slightly more complicate (you just have to have a look at the user's feed). Because it underfulfils the estimations, I don't like that feature.
