    SOME THINGS TO KNOW:

    Mastodon:
    1) isn’t the #Fediverse
    2) was coded by mostly 1 person
    3) was not ready for a Twitter meltdown.
    4) did its best to accommodate it to help with the Muskpocalypse.
    5) has a less than optimal interface that will be improved quickly.
    6) 1/2

@caffeneko @shoq It's a nonprofit so no incentive to disadvantage anyone. More of a case of the instance being overwhelmed by the migration.

@edbott @shoq I assume the ownership of joinmastodon.org was different than ownership of instances.social - b/c the latter served a far longer list of servers with more descriptions and data. It's unfortunate that joinmastodon.org did not cross promote the other page for additional instance self-service.

@shoq There was also a discoverability issue. Most people who went to joinmastodon.org were served a very short list of instances with most of them closed to new registrants. Those that were open were mostly for niche audiences. There was no link to other directories that were open. So for non-technical people it really was baffling.

That might have changed since then but it was the root of the "confusion over finding a server" issue.

Well, now we all do. And that’s a feature of the #Fediverse, not a bug. 3/3

And one more thing about Mastodon.
Despite all the grumbles of people who spent a couple of hours on it—if that— before there were people to follow, the most common complaint was “choosing a server” for your “first” community?
